The Dallas Cowboys have made a corresponding roster move following their decision to sign veteran pass rusher Von Miller to a one-year, $5.5 million contract.
Dallas waived wide receiver Traeshon Holden to create room for Miller. The move clears a roster spot for the 37-year-old former Super Bowl champion as he begins his latest chapter in Dallas.
Holden’s Cowboys tenure ends after one season
Holden entered the Cowboys’ organization as an undrafted free agent in 2025 after playing college football at Oregon. Dallas gave him a chance despite offering only a $3,000 signing bonus and no guaranteed money beyond that amount.
The wide receiver showed flashes during training camp and the preseason. In his preseason debut in August 2025, Holden led the Cowboys with 42 receiving yards on two catches, including a 35-yard reception from Joe Milton III along the sideline.
At the time, Holden made it clear that he believed he belonged in the NFL despite going undrafted. “I’m the ultimate competitor. When I walk on the field, I’m the best player on the field,” Holden said during training camp. “When I went undrafted, I came in the building angry like, ‘Now they got to pay.’”
Holden also had the opportunity to learn from CeeDee Lamb, who took the young receiver under his wing during his time in Dallas. Despite those promising moments, Holden ultimately could not secure a lasting place on Dallas’ roster.
Von Miller takes Holden’s roster spot
The Cowboys needed to clear a roster spot after agreeing to terms with Miller, who brings 15 seasons of NFL experience and two Super Bowl titles to Dallas.
Miller has also been one of the league’s most productive pass rushers throughout his career, recording 129.5 regular-season sacks and earning eight Pro Bowl selections. While he is no longer the dominant edge rusher he was during his prime, Dallas is betting that his experience and situational pass-rushing ability can strengthen its defensive front.

The addition also gives the Cowboys a veteran presence to complement their younger pass rushers. Miller’s experience could be particularly valuable as Dallas develops players such as Donovan Ezeiruaku and Malachi Lawrence.
For Holden, the roster move represents the harsh reality of the NFL. An impressive training camp or preseason performance does not guarantee a roster spot when a team needs to make room for a veteran addition.
Spotrac lists Holden with a $885,000 2026 cap hit, while the Cowboys’ current roster now reflects Miller as the newest addition.
Dallas will now turn its attention to integrating Miller into the defense while continuing to finalize the roster for the 2026 season.
