The Dallas Cowboys have added another major piece to their defense, agreeing to a one-year contract with veteran pass rusher Von Miller. The Cowboys announced the signing Sunday night, bringing the Texas native back home for his 15th NFL season.
Von Miller signs $5.5 million deal with the Cowboys
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the deal is worth $5.5 million and can reach a maximum value of $7.5 million. Miller is no longer expected to be an every-down defender, but Dallas believes his experience and ability to generate pressure can make him a valuable part of its pass-rushing rotation.
The 37-year-old enters the season with 138.5 career sacks, the most among active NFL players. He also recorded nine sacks for the Washington Commanders last season, his highest total since 2021.

Homeboy Miller is about to become a $200 million man after the Cowboys’ contract
Miller’s new Cowboys contract is relatively modest compared with the massive deals he signed during his prime. But financially, the move still pushes him into a remarkable NFL milestone.
Miller has already earned approximately $198.74 million in salary and bonus compensation throughout his career. And with the minimum veteran salary for a player with at least seven years of experience sitting at roughly $1.3 million, Miller’s Cowboys contract will push his career earnings beyond the $200 million mark regardless of where the final contract details land.

Most of that money came during Miller’s decade with the Denver Broncos. The team selected him No. 2 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft, and he earned more than $143.7 million across two contracts in Denver.
He later spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, and Washington Commanders. His Buffalo tenure included three seasons and approximately $47.2 million in earnings, while he earned roughly $7.1 million during his lone season in Washington.
Now, his next paycheck will come from the Cowboys. Miller’s role in Dallas should look considerably different from the one he had earlier in his career.
What Von Miller said after joining the Dallas Cowboys
When asked about joining the Cowboys, Miller said, “They were the first team to contact me, like a week before training camp,” Miller said. “It just seemed right to me. I live here in the offseason, my mom and dad are here, my kids are here. I’ve always had blue in my heart since I was a little boy, I always paid attention to the Dallas Cowboys.”
He added, “My earliest memory of football includes the Dallas Cowboys. I heard my daddy screaming in the back and I ran back there to see what was going on, and he was screaming because the Dallas Cowboys had scored a touchdown. That’s my earliest memory of football, and to be back home, it’s a dream within a dream.”
Miller was born and raised in Texas. And this signing is a complete circle of his life. But he must have a bigger dream in 2026 than just being here. And it must be winning the Super Bowl.
Miller generated 36 quarterback pressures last season while playing only 37% of Washington’s defensive snaps. That included eight solo sacks, two half-sacks and four additional quarterback hits.
He had 289 pass-rush opportunities and posted an 8.4% pass-rush productivity rate. That figure would have ranked third among Dallas’ edge rushers based on their 2025 numbers, behind Jadeveon Clowney and James Houston.
That makes Miller an intriguing addition for a Cowboys defense that does not necessarily need him to carry the pass rush. Instead, Dallas can deploy him selectively and try to maximize his remaining explosiveness.
Miller may not be the player who once terrorized quarterbacks as a full-time superstar. But with 138.5 career sacks, nine sacks last season and two Super Bowl rings on his résumé, the Cowboys are betting there is still plenty left in the tank.
