On Sunday, August 16, the Cowboys made it official, announcing that the veteran pass rusher Von Miller agreed to a one-year contract with the team. Miller knew exactly how to get Cowboys fans talking before his move to Dallas was even officially announced. “Dallas! Let’s make this one Special! 😈,” Miller posted those words on X, sending social media into a frenzy as speculation surrounding his future intensified.
The 37-year-old Miller is entering his 15th NFL season and brings 138.5 career sacks to Dallas, the most among active players. He is also an eight-time Pro Bowler, a seven-time first or second team All-Pro, and a two-time Super Bowl champion.

Let’s dive in to know how the NFL fans, reporters, and analysts reacted to Miller signing with the Cowboys.

Cowboys fans get a message from Dez Bryant
Cowboys legend Dez Bryant wasted no time acknowledging Miller’s arrival. Bryant tagged Miller on X and added two emojis that perfectly captured his reaction: “@VonMiller 😎⭐️”
Miller responded with a single word, “Family!”, that made the interaction even more personal. The exchange added another layer to Miller’s move. Bryant is one of the most recognizable former Cowboys players, while Miller grew up in Texas and attended DeSoto High School before playing college football at Texas A&M.
Ralph Vacchiano reacts with one emoji
Fox Sports NFL reporter Ralph Vacchiano kept his reaction extremely brief: “👀” It was only one emoji, but the message said plenty. Miller is no longer the dominant pass rusher who terrorized offensive tackles in his prime, but adding a player with his résumé to an already talented defensive front is enough to make people take notice.
Jon Machota highlights Cowboys’ pass rush depth
The Athletic’s Jon Machota immediately looked at what Miller’s arrival means for Dallas’ defensive line. “The Cowboys’ top pass rushers will now include Von Miller, Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Malachi Lawrence, and James Houston,” he wrote on X.
That group gives Dallas considerably more options for rotating its edge defenders. Miller does not have to be the centerpiece. Instead, the Cowboys can preserve his legs and put him in situations where his experience and ability to rush the passer are most valuable.
Miller is coming off a nine-sack season with the Washington Commanders, his highest total since 2021. Dallas is expected to use him as a rotational pass rusher rather than an every-down defender, giving defensive coordinator Christian Parker another experienced weapon to deploy in obvious passing situations.
Trey Wingo sees Dallas loading up
Trey Wingo offered perhaps the simplest description of what Dallas has been doing defensively. “Dallas loading up,” Wingo wrote on X.
The Cowboys have certainly made their intentions clear. After committing to defensive tackle Quinnen Williams on a massive three-year, $105.9 million extension, Dallas has now added another accomplished veteran to the front seven.
The additions suggest the Cowboys are serious about giving Christian Parker the personnel needed to build an aggressive defense.
Mauricio Rodriguez provides the reality check
Not everyone is treating the Miller signing as a blockbuster move. Mauricio Rodriguez of A to Z Sports offered a more measured assessment of what the veteran can realistically provide.
“Miller is past his prime… however, if we’re talking about a rotational player who takes the field in passing situations, you shouldn’t mind Von Miller at all,” the Cowboys news writer said in a video.
That may ultimately be the most accurate way to view the signing. Miller is not the same player who won Super Bowl 50 MVP with the Denver Broncos or terrorized quarterbacks during his peak years. Expecting that version of Miller to suddenly return would be unrealistic. But Dallas does not need him to be that player.
The Cowboys need Miller to provide quality snaps, pressure the quarterback in passing situations, and bring veteran experience to a relatively young pass-rushing group.
If he can do that, the signing could prove to be one of the more valuable additions of Dallas’ offseason. And judging by the reaction around the NFL, people are already paying attention.
