Oxnard, California — Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has seen plenty of encouraging performances throughout training camp, but 10 players have stood out enough to exceed his expectations entering the preseason.
Schottenheimer named safety Caleb Downs, defensive lineman Rashan Gary, defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia, cornerback Shavon Revel, wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, wide receiver Camden Brown, offensive tackle Tyler Guyton, running back Javonte Williams, wide receiver Ryan Flournoy and punter Bryan Anger among the players who have impressed him.

Downs has established himself significantly as one of the most intriguing young pieces on Dallas’ defense. Whereas Gary and Ogbonnia have provided encouraging signs along the defensive front. Revel has also continued to draw attention as he works to establish himself in the secondary.
On offense, Williams’ physical running style and the progress of Mingo, Brown and Flournoy have given the Cowboys additional reasons for optimism. Meanwhile, Guyton’s development at offensive tackle also remains important as Dallas evaluates its offensive line.
While these 10 players have stood out during training camp, a few others have raised bigger questions about their position battles and roster outlook. One of them is wide receiver Camden Brown, who made a strong statement in the Cowboys’ first preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Brown recorded two touchdown receptions, including an impressive one-handed grab that quickly became one of the highlights of the game. His performance has added intrigue to Dallas’ wide receiver competition and put the rookie firmly in the conversation for a potential roster spot.
Schottenheimer warns Camden Brown against getting ahead of himself
Brown’s inclusion on Schottenheimer’s list is notable after his impressive preseason debut, but the coach isn’t ready to declare the rookie a lock for the roster.

Asked what Brown needs to show to solidify his spot on the 53-man roster, Schottenheimer said that would be “putting the cart before the horse, a little bit.” Instead, the coach emphasized the competition within the wide receiver room, specifically pointing to Brown, Mingo and Anthony Smith.
It’s a clear indication that Brown’s strong start has put him in the conversation, but the Cowboys still expect him to earn his roster spot. With competition remaining intense, his ability to consistently produce on offense and contribute on special teams could ultimately determine his fate.
So, at this point, Brown has exceeded expectations, but the job is not his yet.
