Von Miller is officially getting his iconic No. 40 jersey with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys announced the latest jersey number assignments Thursday, confirming that Miller will wear No. 40 during the 2026 season. Hunter Luepke, who had worn the number since joining Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2023, will move to No. 30.

Miller has worn No. 40 throughout his NFL career, including during his recent stints with the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams. The number has also become closely associated with the seven time All Pro and eight time Pro Bowler throughout his decorated career.

Von Miller’s no. 40 negotiations had a hilarious twist

The jersey number negotiations between Miller and Luepke became one of the more entertaining Cowboys stories of the week.

According to Cowboys writer Patrik Walker, Miller offered several ways to convince Luepke to give up No. 40, including free chicken for life and full body tattoo work.

The two ultimately reached an agreement that will see Luepke receive an undisclosed amount of equity in Miller’s chicken company, Greener Pastures Chicken.

However, Walker later clarified the joke surrounding the arrangement and denied that Luepke was actually receiving a lifetime supply of chicken as part of the deal. “Nah, he got something light years better than that (peep the story),” the writer said to X user when he was asked if Luepke would get a free supply of chicken for life or not.

In the end, Miller gets the number he has worn for much of his legendary career, while Luepke gets a new number and reportedly a stake in Miller’s chicken business, ‘Greener Pastures Chicken’.

The Cowboys will now have Miller wearing No. 40 when they open the regular season against the New York Giants on Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium.

For Cowboys fans, the sight of Miller wearing four zero in Dallas will be one of the most recognizable images of the team’s 2026 season.
