The Dallas Cowboys opened their preparation for the Washington Commanders with an early injury concern on the defensive side of the football.
James Houston was limited in Wednesday’s practice after aggravating a shoulder injury, according to the Cowboys’ first injury report of Week 2.

The update comes at an important point for Dallas after a disappointing defensive performance in the 28-20 season opener against the New York Giants. The first report does not provide a game status, and Dallas still has practices on Thursday and Friday before Sunday’s matchup.

James Houston starts Week 2 with a shoulder issue
Houston’s shoulder injury is the most notable development on Dallas’ first report. The linebacker was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday, indicating that he was able to take part in at least some portion of practice.

The 27-year-old Houston entered the NFL with Detroit in 2022 and immediately made an impact as a pass rusher. He recorded eight sacks in only seven games as a rookie, one of the more unusual starts to an NFL career. His opportunities were disrupted by injuries afterward, including an ankle injury that limited him during the 2023 season.
Houston joined the Cowboys as Dallas continued adding competition and depth to its pass rush. His availability could become more significant if Dallas needs additional pressure against Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels.

DeMarvion Overshown remains a player to watch
Houston was not the only Cowboys defender listed on the report. DeMarvion Overshown did not participate on Wednesday because of a hamstring injury.
That is particularly relevant because Overshown dealt with a hamstring issue during Dallas’ Week 1 loss to the Giants. He was previously listed as questionable to return after entering the blue medical tent, making his Wednesday absence another development worth watching.
Safety Malik Hooker also missed practice with a forearm injury. Offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius, meanwhile, was listed as a full participant despite a knee injury.
The Cowboys, therefore, opened the week with Houston and Overshown carrying injuries that affected their practice participation, while Hooker was also held out.
Washington also has several players on the report
The Commanders had a longer injury report on Wednesday. Linebacker Frankie Luvu and tight end Chig Okonkwo did not practice because of groin and hamstring injuries, respectively.
Washington also listed Doran Armstrong, K’Lavon Chaisson, Jaylin Lane, Charles Omenihu, Odafe Oweh, and Daron Payne as limited participants. Kaytron Allen, Tyler Owens, and Chris Paul were full participants.
Neither team has assigned a game status yet. Those designations will be included in the final injury report later in the week.
For Dallas, Houston’s shoulder will be one of the developments to monitor closely, especially after the Cowboys allowed 28 points in their Week 1 loss. His participation on Thursday and Friday should provide a clearer indication of how the injury could affect his availability for the game against Washington.
