Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did not hide his disappointment after a 28-20 loss to the New York Giants in the 2026 season opener. The defeat in Christian Parker’s first game as defensive coordinator exposed a unit that ranked among the worst single-game performances in recent NFL history.
Jones revealed the depth of his frustration during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan, where he questioned the defense’s execution, communication, and physicality.

“Last time I was involved in as much change as we made this year … was the first year I bought the Dallas Cowboys and we won one game,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “You should expect more than what we did back then.”
“We’re all very disappointed. We all are, as fans and all. Having said that though, the question is, ‘Okay, what’re we going to do about it? What is there to do about?’ Well the real world is that we’re where we thought we were relative to continually working on the things that you saw kick us in the butt. And we’re going to continue that, Jones said.

He also added, ” Really the very things that frankly cost us to not win that ballgame, or the things that we should be working on and what we were working on going into the game. The facts are we got a lot of new people, not necessarily young players, but we’ve got a lot of new people on defense doing different things that they’ve been doing. So that’s got to come together. If we keep our head down and keep working on it, it will be better than it was Sunday night.”
New York converted 10 of 11 third downs, scored on four of its first five possessions, and rushed for 166 yards while Dallas managed only 69. For an owner who approved a sweeping defensive overhaul, the result was unacceptable.
He later added, “We don’t need to look at the tape to say overall we have to bring to the table a lot more of what we worked hard to change out during the offseason. We have to execute on what we were trying to change out.” The 1989 reference, when Dallas finished 1 and 15, framed a brutal night for new defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

A historically poor defensive showing by the Cowboys against Giants in season opener
The numbers are ugly. Dallas ranked 571 out of 574 defensive performances since Week 1 of the 2025 season based on estimated points allowed per drive. Only one game under former coordinator Matt Eberflus last season was worse.
The Giants converted 10 of 11 third downs, the best rate in Week 1. Dallas allowed four points per drive, up from 2.9 in 2025. New York scored on four of its first five possessions and went 4 for 4 in the red zone.
Quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Running back Cam Skattebo added 81 rushing yards and a score. The Cowboys could not stop the short swing pass, and the Giants ran for 166 yards compared to Dallas’s 69.
Jerry Jones believes communication issues rise to the top
Jones pointed to fundamentals. “Communicate better, the LBs have to fill their assigned areas on the defense,” he said. He also stressed that Dallas must take advantage of turnover opportunities. Per Jon Machota of The Athletic, Jones sounded frustrated by what he saw, and communication issues appear to be at the top of his list.
That problem also plagued the Cowboys a year ago when they had arguably the NFL’s worst defense. Dak Prescott finished with 175 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception. George Pickens dropped multiple passes, and the offense managed only 244 total yards.
What must change in Week 2 for the Cowboys according to Jones
Jones tried to strike a hopeful tone. “We’re very optimistic that we can play better than we did Sunday night,” he said. “We caught a Giants team that is much improved and well coached. We have our head down. We will do some things differently this week.”
That optimism will be tested when the Commanders visit in Week 2. Another performance like Sunday’s would make Jones’s 1989 comparison feel less like a warning and more like a prophecy. For Parker, the margin for error is already thin.
