The Dallas Cowboys defense is drawing enough attention in the 2026 training camp along with the offense. There is no doubt the offensive side of the team, which Dak Prescott called GOTI, is doing great as always.
But the Cowboys defense, which has been taking the blame for one of the worst performances, is showing some good early signs of a reliable defensive unit. Cowboys reporter Dan Rogers shed light on this and shared his observations from the Cowboys’ training camp.
“We know the range of outcomes is high when it comes to the Cowboys’ defense,” Reporter Rogers shared his thoughts on the Cowboys’ defense. “If the coaching turns out to be great and they have added enough good players, they could make a little noise, but those are big ifs.”
He added, “However, if this is what happens, what we’d see in camp is exactly what we’re seeing right now. So many players are impressing, and the coaches have them dialed in. I’m not saying it’s happening, but things are off to a very good start.”

Defense shines as Durant, Downs and Revel headline first padded practice at the Cowboys training camp
The Cowboys’ defense made one of its strongest statements of training camp during Monday’s first padded practice, consistently disrupting the offense with physical play, tight coverage and timely takeaways.
Cornerback Cobie Durant continued his impressive camp by making the defensive play of the day. On August 3, he read Dak Prescott’s eyes before breaking on the ball for an acrobatic red zone interception that drew praise from defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
To talk about rookie safety Caleb Downs, he also continued to flash his versatility. And delivered a textbook run stop against the first-team offense while nearly coming away with an interception after DaRon Bland tipped a pass into the air.
Along with the two players above, veteran safety Julius Wood turned heads with his physicality, forcing an incompletion with a hard hit during team drills and showing a willingness to attack the run.
Meanwhile, second-year cornerback Shavon Revel enjoyed one of his best practices of camp.
After battling CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens throughout the opening week, Revel responded with multiple pass breakups, including one against Pickens that prompted a confident finger wag. Collectively, the secondary showcased improved communication, aggressive coverage and a knack for creating turnovers. It gives the Cowboys plenty of reasons for optimism as training camp enters a more physical phase.
This is the real sign that a defense unit that ranked among the lowest last year could bounce back this year. Let’s see what new DC Parker would do.
