Beyond evaluating the team’s overall physicality, the first padded practices are expected to provide clearer answers at several important positions.
One player to watch is left tackle Tyler Guyton, who has shown flashes of elite talent but has struggled with consistency because of injuries. Earlier in training camp, Schottenheimer praised Guyton’s athletic ability while stressing the importance of staying healthy and finding consistency.
With live contact beginning, Guyton will have an opportunity to prove he can handle the physical demands of protecting Dak Prescott‘s blind side.
Middle linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is another player under the spotlight. After moving into a larger role in the middle of the defense, the athletic linebacker will now be tested against the Cowboys’ powerful interior offensive line in full contact situations. His ability to withstand the physical nature of the position could go a long way in determining how Dallas structures its defense this season.
The running back competition also becomes more meaningful with pads on. Rookie Jaydon Blue has generated buzz with several explosive runs during early practices.
But padded sessions will offer a better indication of whether that speed and playmaking ability can consistently translate when defenders are allowed to finish plays more realistically.
As the Cowboys enter the next phase of training camp, Schottenheimer’s message is straightforward. Physicality, sound fundamentals, and disciplined football will be the standard as Dallas begins its first padded practices of 2026.
