As the Dallas Cowboys opened 2026 training camp in Southern California, the team’s front office made it clear that securing defensive tackle Quinnen Williams for the long haul is a top priority.
Co-owner and COO Stephen Jones confirmed Tuesday that the organization has already initiated discussions with Williams’ agent regarding a contract extension and signaled a strong commitment to the star defensive lineman. “He’s at the top of our list,” Jones said, according to Cowboys reporter Joseph Hoyt.
Jones noted that the team has held discussions with Williams’ representation about the process of a potential extension. The announcement came during the team’s traditional training camp press conference in Oxnard.
Why is an extension on Williams an investment
The Cowboys’ interest in locking up Williams is hardly a surprise given the substantial investment they made to acquire him. Last November, Dallas executed a blockbuster trade with the New York Jets, sending a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick, and defensive tackle Mazi Smith to New York in exchange for the three-time Pro Bowler. The Jets will receive the better of the Cowboys’ two first-round selections in 2027.
Owner Jerry Jones had hinted that the moves in the works would not disappoint fans. But as the contract is going to end, Williams is waiting for an extension, if not a raise, from Jones or the Cowboys front office.
Williams is currently playing under a four-year, $96 million extension he signed with the Jets in July 2023. The deal was the second-highest average salary for a defensive tackle in NFL history at the time of signing at $24 million per year. It includes $47.835 million as guaranteed at signing and a total of $66 million in practical guarantees.
He is under contract through the 2027 season and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2028. For the 2026 season, Williams carries a cap hit of $21,632,353 and will earn $21,750,000 in cash.
The market for elite defensive tackles has continued to escalate, which could complicate negotiations. Spotrac currently projects Williams’ market value at roughly $31.3 million per season, which would place him in line for a three-year deal worth approximately $94 million.
And the timing of the negotiations is noteworthy, as the Philadelphia Eagles recently signed defensive tackle Jalen Carter to a four-year, $152 million extension, setting a new benchmark for the position.
What on-field impact does Quinnen Williams have?
Williams has established himself as one of the most dominant defensive tackles in the NFL. Through 106 career games, he has amassed 343 total tackles, including 208 solo stops and 135 assists. His pass rushing production features 41.5 career sacks along with eight forced fumbles and two interceptions.
In the 2025 season split between the Jets and Cowboys, Williams recorded 53 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and one interception across 15 games. His ability to disrupt plays in the backfield is evident with 62 career stuffs for 87 yards lost, making him a consistent force against both the run and pass.
Since arriving in Dallas, Williams has made an immediate impact on the field. In just seven games with the Cowboys, he recorded 32 total pressures and 23 quarterback hurries to go with an impressive 89.6 overall defensive grade. He also finished fifth in run stop win rate at 43 percent among 204 qualified players in 2025. He has the potential to lift the Cowboys’ defense, which has not been performing well while the team is uncertain about the defensive positions on the roster.
Additionally, Williams reunited with his former defensive line coach, Aaron Whitecotton, in Dallas and joined former teammates on the Cowboys’ coaching staff and roster. The Cowboys have paired him alongside Kenny Clark to form one of the most formidable interior defensive lines in the league.
