Cowboys extend Brevyn Spann-Ford with new $18 million contract after promising offseason performance

The Dallas Cowboys have locked up one of their most promising young offensive pieces, agreeing to a three-year, $18 million contract extension with tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford. 

The deal, which includes $12.075 million guaranteed, keeps the 26-year-old in Dallas through the 2029 season and prevents him from hitting restricted free agency next offseason.

Standing at 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds, Spann-Ford possesses a rare blend of size and athleticism that has long intrigued the Cowboys’ coaching staff.

Spann-Ford’s journey to this payday is a testament to perseverance. After going undrafted out of Minnesota in 2024, he clawed his way onto the roster and appeared in all 34 games over his first two seasons, recording 18 catches for 178 yards and a touchdown. His primary contributions have come as a punishing blocker and core special teams player, where he logged 50% of the unit’s snaps last season.

At Minnesota, he was a three-year starter who finished his college career with 95 receptions for 1,061 yards and seven touchdowns, including a team-leading 42 catches in 2022. That production hinted at the pass-catching potential he has only begun to unlock at the professional level.

This offseason, that potential finally materialized. Spann-Ford turned heads throughout training camp in Oxnard, earning praise from quarterback Dak Prescott for his dedication and improved route-running.

“Great camp,” Dak said when asked about Spann-Ford during the Oxnard training camp. “He’s a guy that’s just done everything right since he’s been here. I give a lot of credit to the guys that show up every day in the offseason or the guys hitting me up, hey, when’s the next time you’re throwing? And Brev is the epitome of that. Anytime I had the ball this offseason in Dallas, Brev was there. He was ready to go. I think that just shows his mindset. It shows the mentality that he worked with this offseason. Then, obviously, the chemistry we were able to create in that time has helped out here as well. He’s playing on fire, and he’s doing a hell of a job.”

His emergence as a reliable pass-catcher, combined with his established prowess as a blocker, allowed him to leapfrog former second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker on the depth chart and secure the TE2 role behind starter Jake Ferguson.

For the Cowboys, the extension is a proactive move that rewards a homegrown talent and solidifies the tight end position for years to come. With Ferguson also under contract through 2029, Dallas now has a formidable one-two punch at the position. For Spann-Ford, the deal represents a remarkable rise from undrafted afterthought to a valued, long-term building block.
