Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer delivered a strong endorsement of defensive coordinator Christian Parker as the team opened 2026 training camp in Oxnard, California.
Parker was promoted to lead Dallas’ defense this offseason after serving as the team’s defensive backs coach. Although this is his first opportunity as a defensive coordinator, Schottenheimer said Parker has been preparing for the role for years.

When the head coach of the Cowboys appeared before the media at the inaugural presser for the training camp, he was asked about the defensive coordinator. And his answers suggest that the head coach is highly impressed by Parker’s work ethic and schemes.
“Incredible communicator. I can’t say that enough,” Schottenheimer told reporters. “The way you know he’s an elite coach is when you walk by his office and players, I mean multiple players are in there wanting to listen and talk to him about schemes and things like that.”
“The organization, the way he’s organized this camp on the defensive side of the ball from the individual section to the tackling circuit drills to the ball disruption drills to the install packages from first and second down fronts, pressures, coverages, things like that. He is a first-time coordinator that doesn’t act like a first time coordinator.”
“Christian’s been preparing for [being a coordinator] for four, five, six years. He’s known that this is where he wanted to be, in the defensive coordinator chair of an NFL football team. Maybe the hardest-working coach I’ve ever been around,” the head coach added.
Schottenheimer said the players’ willingness to spend extra time with Parker speaks to the respect he has earned within the locker room. He also praised Parker’s organization throughout training camp, saying every aspect of the defensive installation has been carefully planned.
The Cowboys head coach added that Parker’s promotion was the result of years of preparation rather than a sudden opportunity.
Track record of defensive coordinator Christian Parker
Parker entered the NFL with the Denver Broncos in 2021 as their defensive backs coach. During his four seasons in Denver (2021–2024), he helped develop one of the league’s better secondaries.
In 2024, Denver’s defense emerged as one of the NFL’s top units. The Broncos finished 3rd in points allowed (18.3 per game) and 7th in total defense (317.1 yards allowed per game). The secondary also played a major role in forcing takeaways, with Denver recording 27 interceptions, the most in the NFL that season.
Parker was widely credited for the development of Pat Surtain II, who established himself as one of the league’s elite cornerbacks during Parker’s tenure. He also worked with young defensive backs including Ja’Quan McMillian and Riley Moss and helped Denver build one of the NFL’s strongest defensive backfields.
Before joining the Cowboys, Parker spent the 2025 season as the Philadelphia Eagles‘ defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach. He was part of a coaching staff that helped Philadelphia field one of the league’s top defenses while further strengthening his résumé before earning his first NFL defensive coordinator job in Dallas.
Although Parker has never called plays as an NFL defensive coordinator before 2026, his reputation has been built on player development, secondary coaching, and detailed defensive preparation. Those qualities are a major reason the Cowboys promoted him to oversee one of the NFL’s most talented defenses.
DaRon Bland also praises coach Parker
Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland echoed Schottenheimer’s confidence in Parker when speaking with reporters during training camp after questions on the team’s doubtful defensive unit. Asked by NFL insider Josina Anderson about the team’s new defensive coordinator, Bland highlighted Parker’s football knowledge and teaching style.
“Great, you know. He’s definitely a football head. Definitely teaches about the game and wants you to see where your head’s at with it and just wants you to play and make your worth for it, so it’s been good,” Bland said.
Parker now takes charge of a Cowboys defense expected to be one of the team’s biggest strengths in 2026. As training camp progresses, Dallas will look for his preparation and communication to translate into strong performances on the field, especially on defense.
